Mathematical Methods and Modelling in Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production (Mathematics in Industry)

Hydrocarbon exploration and production incorporate great technology challenges for the oil and gas industry. In order to meet the world's future demand for oil and gas, further technological advance is needed, which in turn requires research across multiple disciplines, including mathematics, geophysics, geology, petroleum engineering, signal processing, and computer science.

This book addresses important aspects and fundamental concepts in hydrocarbon exploration and production. Moreover, new developments and recent advances in the relevant research areas are discussed, whereby special emphasis is placed on mathematical methods and modelling. The book reflects the multi-disciplinary character of the hydrocarbon production workflow, ranging from seismic data imaging, seismic analysis and interpretation and geological model building, to numerical reservoir simulation. Various challenges concerning the production workflow are discussed in detail.

The thirteen chapters of this joint work, authored by international experts from academic and industrial institutions, include survey papers of expository character as well as original research articles. Large parts of the material presented in this book were developed between November 2000 and April 2004 through the European research and training network NetAGES, "Network for Automated Geometry Extraction from Seismic". The new methods described here are currently being implemented as software tools at Schlumberger Stavanger Research, one of the world's largest service providers to the oil industry.

Petrel manual. Version 3.3

Basic Applied Reservoir Simulation

The electronic explosion that we have been witnessing over the past two decades has transformed reservoir simulation from a some what esoteric approach to a practical toolbox of immense importance. With the use of the tools from this toolbox, today’s engineering community has an opportunity to better understand not only the intricacies offluid-flow dynamics in increasingly complex reservoirs, but also the characteristics of fluid-flow dynamics in wellbores, flow patterns developing within the immediate vicinity of perforations, the interaction of vertical, slanted, horizontal, and multilateral wells and the reservoir, and the complexities of reservoir characterization. These areas represent only a small portion of a list that includes some challenging issues playing critical roles in the optimum development of hydrocarbon reservoirs, and in the optimized implementation of capital-intensive projects that can be investigated with numerical simulation.

Reservoir Simulation

More than 13 years ago, the first edition of Reservoir Stimulation was published. The second edition followed in 1989 and contained substantial additions, updates and two new chapters. Planning for the third edition began in October 1994 in response to the demand for an updated version of the book.

This new edition has been completely rewritten to reflect the changing technologies in the industry and contains 20 chapters written by 44 authors. It continues to provide an overview of reservoir stimulation from an all-encompassing engineering standpoint, an overview currently unavailable elsewhere. Reservoir Stimulation sets forth a rationalisation of stimulation using reservoir engineering concepts, and addresses topics such as formation characterisation, hydraulic fracturing and matrix acidizing. Formation damage, which refers to a loss in reservoir productivity, is also examined comprehensively.

This extensive reference work remains essential reading for petroleum industry professionals involved in the important activities of reservoir evaluation, development and management, who require invaluable skills in the application of the techniques described for the successful exploitation of oil and gas reservoirs. Contributors to this volume are among the most recognized authorities in their individual technologies.

Practical Reservoir Simulation

Practical Reservoir Simulation uses a descriptive style on how to practically carry out reservoir simulations, written by a seasoned practicing simulation engineer. Mathematical development is kept to a minimum since this is covered in depth in many books and the literature.

In particular, it shows how to link geology and simulation input the most critical aspect of successful reservoir simulation.

Practical Reservoir Simulation covers all of the fundamental techniques that are unique to reservoir simulation, such as pseudo relative permeability. The second half of the book describes advanced studies, compositional modelling, hydraulically fractured and horizontal wells, EOR processe and thermal simulation with a heavy emphasis on steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD).

This reference provides a unique resource for individuals working in this field.

Lecture Notes on Applied Reservoir Simulation

Reservoir simulation, or modeling, is one of the most powerful techniques currently available to the reservoir engineer. The author, Prof Leonard F Koederitz, (Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus at the University of Missouri-Rolla) is a highly notable author and teacher, with many teaching awards. This book has been developed over his twenty years in teaching to undergraduate petroleum engineering students, with the knowledge that they would in all likelihood be model-users, not developers. Most other books on reservoir simulation deal with simulation theory and development. For this book, however, the author has performed model studies and debugged user problems; while many of these problems were actual model errors (especially early on), a fair number of the discrepancies resulted from a lack of understanding of the simulator capabilities, or inappropriate data manipulation. The book reflects changes in both simulation concepts and philosophy over the years

Petroleum reservoir simulation

One of the best tools that the reservoir engineer has at his or her disposal, allowing the engineer and geologist to create the most efficient and cost-effective plan possible for drilling and production. If a simulation is faulty, too general or inaccurate in any way, this can affect the production, cost and time spent at the site, which affects the bottom line. In this volume, packed with cutting-edge information on new technology and techniques, the authors show you how to:

Eliminate guesswork in reservoir simulation

Translate more efficient simulations into higher production

Reduce costs at the site with a more efficient plan

Create good habits that will carry you through your career

This book offers a practical, real-world approach to solving reservoir simulation problems. As a reference for the engineer in the field, it offers a new approach using more practical mathematical models for the engineer to devise his or her own approach to a particular problem.

Petroleum engineering. Principles and practice

The need for this book has arisen from demand for a current text from our students in Petroleum Engineering at Imperial College and from post-experience Short Course students. It is, however, hoped that the material will also be of more general use to practising petroleum engineers and those wishing for aa introduction into the specialist literature.

The book is arranged to provide both background and overview into many facets of petroleum engineering, particularly as practised in the offshore environments of North-West Europe. The material is largely based on the authors' experience as teachers and consultants and supplemented by worked problems where they are believed to enhance understanding.

The authors would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to all the people who have helped in the preparation of this book by technical comment and discussion and by giving permission to reproduce material. In particular we would like to thank our present colleagues and students at Imperial College and at ERC Energy Resource Consultants Ltd. for their stimulating company, Jill and Jane1 for typing seemingly endless manuscripts; Dan Smith at Graham and Trotman Ltd. for his perseverence and optimism; and Lesley and Joan for believing that one day things would return to normality.

Reservoir Stimulation in Petroleum Production

Reservoir stimulation and artificial lift are the two main activities of the production engineer in the petroleum and related industries. The main purpose of stimulation is to enhance the property value by the faster delivery of the petroleum fluid and/or to increase ultimate economic recovery.

Matrix stimulation and hydraulic fracturing are intended to remedy, or even improve, the natural connection of the wellbore with the reservoir, which could delay the need for artificial lift. This chapter outlines stimulation techniques as tools to help manage and optimize reservoir development.

Understanding stimulation requires understanding the fundamental issues of petroleum production and the position and applicability of the process.
